Advice to Loyola Student Visiting Baltimore

Since Baltimore, Maryland is the place that I have been living this Summer, I would recommend that a Loyola Student knows a number of things to be best prepared. Loyola is located in Baltimore, Maryland so there are some conveniently located places to attend when taking a break away from classes and study time. Baltimore is a place where it’s very easy to use your bike since they have designated bike paths for bikers. Miss Shirley’s in Roland Park is a great place to go to for brunch. Although Baltimore is popular for seafood, I would recommend going to PF Chang’s and trying their barbecue pork spare ribs. Some traditional aspects of this city include going to church, joining in on a community service opportunity such cleaning a park or reading to children. One site to visit is the Inner Harbor in Federal Hill. I would recommend that when getting close to people here, it’s good to pray for wisdom and trust God’s leading just like anything else. In terms of influence...

Chicken and Cheddar Green Onion Waffles

Miss Shirley’s cafe in Baltimore, Maryland is popular for brunch menu items, including their chicken and cheddar green onion waffles. I tried the chicken and cheddar green onion waffles when I went to Miss Shirley’s for my birthday many years ago. Miss Shirley’s has been featured on the Food Networks, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and has won multiple awards. Overall, it’s a perfect place for families to gather and enjoy special meals together.       To make the chicken, it usually goes through a special process. It’s a boneless chicken breast cut into pieces. It has to be thawed, marinated with buttermilk, coated with benne seed, and flour. It’s then deep fried and drained from the grease to give a crispy crunchy texture. It is drizzled with Honey Mustard Aioli. Finally, the chicken is served as a side to the waffles.       The waffles aren’t your typical waffles. To make the waffles, it has...

Corned Beef, Potatoes and Cabbage

While living in Baltimore, MD, I lived with a couple from 2016-2020 and the lady of the house cooked for us a traditional Irish meal, cabbage, potatoes and corned beef. She used the freshest ingredients in preparing her meal and would let me help her serve the food. Since she would cook it mainly during St Patrick’s day, she would invite close family and friends over to eat with us. Finally, she had a lot of experience cooking meals and providing this meal for her family was essential to them coming together, being welcomed and enjoying fruitful conversations.      Just to give you a little history, before I met her, her family ran a restaurant so they were really great at cooking together. I’ve never seen the restaurant or been to it. I have been the recipient of their food and experienced their delicious meals from their well developed cooking skills. Finally, there were times where she invited me to cook for them.   ...

Engaging In Activities That Impact Quality Living In Baltimore

What's been nice about engaging in certain activities on a daily basis this summer in Baltimore is that they bring meaning, have an ongoing purpose and make for a quality life while living in my apartment, being in my neighborhood and attending GGWO. With that, I hope to invite you in to get a better picture of the activities that people around me or I engage in while at these specific locations in Baltimore. Please keep reading to find out more about what happens daily to better understand what the people or I value committing to in these places and I will try not to get too personal. Haha      I have been at my apartment more this summer and of course given the changes after the pandemic for so many of us, people working from home has become a common daily lifestyle. Usually, the day begins with me in my apartment just enjoying living in communion with God by the Holy Spirit. This experience involves quietly listening to God, receivi...

Baltimore: Where I Grew To Value Community

Baltimore is a place where I struggled to call home for years, yet eventually came to appreciate the essence of community. Before I moved to Baltimore back in the Summer of 2013, I had this vision to live in a missionary house and a friend of mine eventually let me stay with her. This Summer I live downtown, in an area called Mount Vernon. People may come to Baltimore to flee for refuge from conflict in their country, receive support for their families, partake in social events or invest in the community. I didn’t realize what to expect but after many years of traveling and relocating for business I grew to understand the value of living in one place for years, a place like Baltimore, MD.       Just to give you a better understanding of why I came to Baltimore, I was really led by God to live in a missionary house. I didn’t know it would be in Baltimore but the door opened up as a place of refuge. I had a hard time...
